Japanese Manners & Etiquette: What Travelers Should Know

Japan is known as one of the most polite countries in the world. To enjoy your visit comfortably, here are some essential manners and etiquette tips to keep in mind.

1. Manners in Public Places

・Etiquette on Trains & Buses

  • Keep phone calls to a minimum and avoid talking on the phone
  • Speak quietly when conversing
  • Offer priority seats to the elderly, pregnant women, and people with disabilities
  • Line up properly and let people exit before boarding

・Eating & Smoking While Walking

  • Eating while walking is not a common practice in Japan
  • Smoking is only allowed in designated smoking areas

2. Restaurant Etiquette

・Basic Table Manners

  • Saying “Itadakimasu” before eating and “Gochisousama deshita” after finishing is appreciated
  • Do not stick chopsticks upright into food (it resembles a funeral ritual)
  • Making noise while eating is generally discouraged (except for slurping noodles, which is acceptable)
  • If there are no communal chopsticks, use the opposite end of your chopsticks when serving others

・Tipping Culture

  • There is no tipping culture in Japan; tipping may cause confusion
  • Instead, express gratitude by saying “Thank you”

3. Shrine & Temple Etiquette

  • Bow before entering a torii gate
  • Walk on the sides of the path, as the center is for the gods
  • Cleanse your hands and mouth at the purification fountain
  • Offer money quietly and perform two bows, two claps, and one bow before praying

4. Shopping Etiquette

  • Use the tray provided when handing money to the cashier
  • Do not touch products without permission, especially delicate crafts
  • When trying on clothes, remove shoes and ask store staff for assistance if needed

5. Greetings & Communication

  • Bowing is the standard way to greet others (a light bow is sufficient)
  • Shaking hands is less common, especially with strangers
  • Avoid excessive hand gestures

Understanding and practicing Japanese manners will help ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip. Respecting local customs will make your visit even more memorable!
